The meaning and origin of ‘hats off to someone’?

This is an expression that has been around since the 19th century, and it is normally used when you wish to show your admiration for someone. In the old days when wearing hats was common, men showed their respect for someone either by taking their hats off or by tipping their hats.

*Hats off to him — it takes a lot of courage to try and learn music at the age of 60.
