What is the meaning of ‘stand something on its head’?

When you ‘stand’ or ‘turn something on its head’, you turn everything upside down. You treat an argument in a totally different way; you make an idea or belief the opposite of what it was before. The attempt here is to get people to think differently.

*The speaker took the accepted view that sons were better than daughters and stood the argument on its head.
