‘Lower your sights’

If you lower your sights, you expect less from a given situation.

Examples: With the job market becoming tight, many people have started to lower their sights. * “My cousin Harish was hoping to become an engineer. He, however, had to lower his sights when he failed to get good marks in his twelfth class exams.”
